To employers:
- consider implementation of confidential sources of emotional,
psychological and psychiatric assistance such as employee assistance
programs.
- Educate employees on recognizing indicators of excessive stress or
depression.
- Have effective workplace harassment and discrimination policies and
procedures set out for employees.
- Follow the policies as written, with no distinction between formal and
informal, written and verbal complaints.
- Train and update all employees, on sexual harassment policies.
- Set boundaries of acceptable behavior according to the Ontario Human
Rights Code, Sexual harassment cannot be acceptable - zero tolerance.
To the Ontario Human Rights Commission:
- Encourage victims to come forward as the commission offers neutral
investigations. The commission must investigate.
- Develop an advertising campaign to promote public awareness and education.
To the Ministry of Labor:
- Make a priority of the ongoing study of inclusion of sexual harassment in
the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
To the provincial government.
- Maintain and provide the Ontario Human Rights Commission with the
resources it needs to carry out its mandate, such as increasing the
investigation capabilities of the commission to prevent cases from falling
through the cracks.
General:
- More research is needed in several areas, including studies to examine the
links between various forms of sexual harassment violence.
- Chatham-Kent should proclaim the first week of June Sexual Harassment Week
in memory of Theresa Vince.
