" Shooting Rampage At Factory "
December 6 2001 - Goshen, Indiana

During the afternoon, a man opened fire at a simulated wood factory killing at least one coworker and injuring several others before turning the gun on himself. Initial reports indicated as many as 30 persons were injured. Workers told authorities an automatic weapon was used and some injuries appeared to be shotgun wounds. The gunman was a disgruntled worker that was being terminated from employment.

ANALYSIS

Experience shows that most incidents of extreme violence, when perpetrated by an employee or former employee, are preceded by progressively escalating abusive behavior including threats. Abusive behavior must carry consequences and threats must be taken seriously as they often are the last of a series of conflicts that culminates in serious violence. Violence prevention policies, and subsequent training, needs to include a NO TOLERANCE statement on threats and violent behavior. Procedures need to include safety measures and steps to resolve such situations. There should be interaction with the police on this policy in order for them to be aware they may be called under certain circumstances – and the critical response that is necessary.
