February 5, 2001- "He Always Said That If
Someone Screwed Him He'd Get Him"
The tragic circumstances that occurred Feb 5 2001
in the workplace shooting of 8 innocent staff at the
Navistar-owned Plant near Chicago, again reinforces the importance
of vigilance of troubled workers or former employees. It is said
that William Dan Baker, the x-employee shooter, wanted to be known
as "A person you didn't mess with. He always said that if
someone screwed him he'd get him."
The question of whether this tragedy could have
been averted remains, as the occurrence is still under
investigation. Where there are warning signs of the escalation of
violence from threatening behavior--they can never be overlooked.
Disgruntled employees, or former employees, that have a perception
of injustice, and are revenge focused, can be dangerous.

ANALYSIS |
|
Much violence can be averted through knowledge and
the action taken as a result of early warning signs. Once an
individual puts a plan of revenge into action--it may be too late
to control.
As a manager, human resources professional, or
other company official--do you know the warning signs of violence
escalation? Does your company have an effective "Violence
& Harassment Prevention Program?" Many preventive
measures can be put in place.
