" Man Kills Employee Then Himself"
August 29 2003 - Nashville

A man facing charges of raping and kidnapping his former girlfriend opened fire at the woman’s workplace, leaving one employee dead before killing himself.  The gunman, 43 year old Thomas Edgar Harrison held off a SWAT team for more than an hour.   Gregory Griffith, 39, was killed after he apparently confronted Harrison , police said.

ANALYSIS

Approximately 7 % of all workplace violence is related to relationships problems;   relations between co-workers that have gone bad or, on other occasions, relationships that have their roots in a domestic environment.   In this case it is criminal behaviour against a former partner that now becomes the victim.   Employers who are aware of volatile relationships, with potential violence against their employee, have an obligation to work on a safety plan with the victim.    Employees finding themselves in a violent situation with immediate danger should have a safety plan that includes withdrawing from the area and finding a safe location.   Confrontation of an armed individual, by an untrained unarmed person, frequently has tragic consequences.
