MAKE YOURSELF A VALUABLE COMMODITY

How can you make yourself more valuable to your organization? The key is to understand clearly your role, position or job within the company and then successfully apply yourself.  To reach that valuation, ask yourself the following questions which, when answered, should define your role within the company and lead you on the road to success.

1) What is my position all about?  Usually a position within a company is created to meet a need within the organization. It is imperative that you understand fully the needs for your position.

2) Why was I hired for the position? Once you understand the needs of your position the next step is to understand why you were hired for the position.  What qualifications do you possess that meant you were best for the position? Remember that others probably applied for the same position.  Why then were you chosen above the others? Do you have a specific skill or talent which the company needs and which others did not have?  Find out why you were hired rather than others and then apply those reasons towards your position.

3) What talents should I apply to my position? Once you find out why you were hired you are then able to apply your talents, skill or ability to your new position. Study the position you were hired for and make a list of the needs your position has.  Then make list of your abilities. Apply your abilities to meet your job needs and you will make yourself a valuable employee.

4) How can I contribute to the team? Does your position involve others? Is there a team which you are involved in?  If there is, study how you can contribute to that team. Again, what skills do you have that would assist the team, while at the same time making you an integral piece in the overall team effort.  Remember, be a team player.  When the team wins, everyone benefits.  If the team fails to reach their objective, everyone is often blamed whether they are responsible or not.  It is of benefit to succeed.

5) How can I assist management?  Unless you are the owner of the company, you probably have someone to whom you are responsible.  Perhaps you are responsible to more than one person? Ask yourself what you can do to assist them?  What could you do to make their work load easier or possibly more productive. Become important to the organization by learning what those above you need and then supply it.

6) See the BIG PICTURE.  What is your company's big picture? What are the ultimate goals and objectives of the company and how do you fit in?  Once you understand what the company is all about you should be able to discover how your position fits into the BIG PICTURE.

7) Can your contribute?  What opportunities does your position give you that others may not have, to contribute to the overall strategies and objectives of the company?  Could it be better customer service or a clearer process structure or better work flow outline?  Do you notice areas for improvement? Are there processes that are wrong or could be significantly changed to result in savings in both cost and time or result in an increase in productivity? At every turn ask what can you contribute? If the company advances because you contributed then you are a more valued employee.
